When a search engine learns to create, where should a search end?
Making generated content live inside search — and making it worth keeping.
Supply side — search has to prove it isn't replaceable. In the age of AI, if a chat tool can just answer you, why search at all? "Search + AI" had to create new value — not simply be replaced.
Demand side — users are shifting from finding content to creating it. In the UGC era, what they want is authentic, created things they can use and adapt — not a standard answer.
Both forces point to the same move: AIGC. It turns search from "handing you information" into "helping you make the thing you want." Text Creator is that bet.
Bing Text Creator is a Creator Answer that lives on the Bing search results page (SERP). When someone searches with the intent to create something—draft an email, write a toast, outline a weekly plan, tell a bedtime story, etc.—Creator generates, edits, and helps them use that content right inside the results page.
Everything started with an easily overlooked observation: a Bing user arrives with a query—not, as a ChatGPT user might, with an intent to create.
That difference changes everything. A blank input box is freedom for a ChatGPT user, but a barrier for a search user: they don't even know creation is possible here, let alone what they could create. So Creator could never be about "making the generation box bigger." It had to answer a different question: how do you lower the barrier to creation in a search context—and make that creation genuinely matter to search?
As the Design Owner, I believe the hardest part wasn't "making the AI write fluently." Two deeper questions determined whether this feature had any reason to exist at all:
These two questions became the threads I followed throughout the project.
The shipped experience answers both questions at a foundational level.
Templates → generation → Tweak. Scenario templates lower the barrier for users who arrive without a creation intent; generation and Tweak editing keep the whole act inside the SERP.
A first taste of "taste": AI illustration for stories & poems. Even in this base version, a generated story or poem isn't just a block of text — Creator pairs it with AI-generated illustration, turning plain output into something that already feels a little more like a piece of work. This is the earliest, simplest proof of the belief that runs through the whole project: taste is designed, not automatically given.
The experience passed multiple ship reviews and went through deep leadership review. And when the data came back, it confirmed the original hypothesis, that extending search into creation would lead to more valuable search:
People who used Creator didn't just complete one creation — they were stickier and returned to search more often. The loop held: creation really did feed back into search.
To answer Q1 more deeply, I prototyped a loop that closes back into search:
In the Story scenario, a user reads a story the AI generated, and an entity in it — say, "red fox" — is recognized and highlighted. On hover, a knowledge card (Britannica) opens in place; "Learn more" opens a new tab to go deeper. Curiosity is sparked while reading their own creation — and they return to search.
What we're after: search sparks creation, and creation grows new searches. The created content is no longer dead text you read once and discard — it becomes a living object studded with entry points back into search. Creator didn't take the user away from search; it pulled them deeper in. This is the creator value only a search engine can offer.
The shipped version and this prototype validate the same belief, at different levels of completeness: proving it can live in search was only the start — the real question is how it can live well there.
AI can generate words, but a grammatically correct block of plain text is still far from "something the user would actually use — even proudly send out." There's a gap in between: a clearer information hierarchy, a tone that fits the occasion, and a form worth sharing. Closing that gap is exactly the work of design.
Is Text Creator a "text generator"? Or a creation experience with taste? My answer is the latter — and the north star pushes that belief one step further: with AI, how good could this get? I came to see that "taste" has no single answer: different creation intents call for different ways of being "well-made." AI shouldn't respond to every kind of creation in the same shape. That idea converged into three north star concepts — one belief unfolding across three kinds of creation intent: Text Creator
For functional content: Recipe / Meal Planner / Cover Letter… Recipe / Meal Planner / Cover Letter…
Turn "generated content" directly into a "usable deliverable" — a weekly meal plan shouldn't be a lump of text, but a cleanly structured, scannable card you can print or share as-is.
For narrative content · stories / picture books
Turn a story into an immersive read: illustrated, read aloud, page-turnable — with entities inside that expand into knowledge cards back into search (building on the validated loop above).
For emotional content · poems / lyrical writing
Visualize the emotion of a poem — with fractal art, generative visuals, AI-generated JavaScript motion — so the mood of the words can be seen, not just read.
These three concepts explore how far "tailoring beauty to the material" can be pushed as AI gets stronger. They represent the future direction I set for this product.
Building an "AI writing tool" is easy. The hard part is being clear about what it should contribute: 做一个"AI 写作工具"很容易。
This project reframed my design question—from "Is the interface usable?" to "Where should a single act of creation end?"
